Audition Information

We are now accepting auditions for the 2025-26 school year. Auditions are open to students currently in 8th-11th grades as of the 2024-25 school year.

Auditions will be held in person at the Oldham County Schools Arts Center.

The next date for 2025-26 Auditions for Musical Theatre, Visual Art and String Orchestra is Saturday, February 22, 2025.

The next date for 2025-26 Audition Interviews for Technical Theatre is Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

Audition Requirements:

MUSICAL THEATRE

  • Each student should prepare one-minute of two audition songs, one ballad and one up-tempo that show range and dynamics.
  • Each student should prepare a one-minute monologue that shows your ability to create a believable character
  • Movement: You will be asked to repeat a modern and jazz dance sequence demonstrated by an instructor. No experience is necessary. Aptitude for movement is what we are looking for. You may wear either ballet or jazz shoes (jazz preferred). Hair must be pulled back and securely fastened for girls. Girls: Solid legging or fitted capris. Solid fitted athletic top or leotard. Boys: Fitted athletic or jazz pants. Fitted athletic top.
  • Bring two letters of recommendation from a teacher.

STRING ORCHESTRA

  • A student may audition in the area of strings on violin, viola, cello or bass.
  • Each student should prepare two short pieces of contrasting styles or one concerto or show piece exhibiting multiple themes.
  • These prepared pieces should demonstrate the student’s best performance qualities.
  • Memorization of the music is optional.
  • Bring two prepared scales of your choice.
  • Bring one letter of recommendation from a teacher.

TECHNICAL THEATRE

We are seeking students who are interested in the duties of stage technicians and their contribution to the total aesthetic effect of a dramatic production. Students will interview for admission.

Interviews for the Technical Theater focus play to a student’s strengths. Applicants may choose from one of the following options for their interview:

Option A: Portfolio Review

  • Include pictures of construction/pre-production work you have created and any photos of the finished show or product.
  • Include any paperwork, sketches, renderings, models, etc. that you think show your best work.
  • Interview questions to respond to in the interview will be provided upon registering.
  • Bring two letters of recommendation from a teacher.

Option B:

  • Students who do not have a background in stagecraft or theatre design should prepare a typed statement explaining why they would like to become a part of our program.
  • Applicants should be prepared for a question and answer session that will focus on their interest in becoming a part of CAPAA.
  • Bring two letters of recommendation from a teacher.

3-D VISUAL ART

  • Students should submit a portfolio that contains 6 pieces of art.
  • The portfolio must include the following 5 pieces: Five works that show the breadth of experience in different media and best reflect a range of abilities or five works that represent a skill in a single media. (The five works from a single media should be examples from one of the following categories: Ceramics, Digital Arts, Drawing, Film, Graphic Design, Multimedia, Painting, Photography, Sculpture)
  • The portfolio must also include the following piece: One work from direct observation. (i.e. figure, landscape, still life)
  • Artist statements must be included for any two (2) pieces of art.
  • Bring one letter of recommendation from an art teacher.
  • The successful completion of two art courses is a prerequisite for entering CAPAA.

In preparation for your audition:

  • Prepare any music, writing, monologue, art that is required for your audition.
  • Read through the audition requirements for your arts area to make sure you know what judges are going to ask you to do.
  • Practice what you plan to do at your audition in front of as many people as you can.  The more times you practice your audition, the less nervous you will be at the audition.
  • For musical theatre, please bring your music on your phone or laptop.

During your audition:

  • Introduce yourself and the areas for which you are auditioning.
  • An audition committee will score your audition.  There will be at least three (3) arts professionals in the room with you.
  • You will be asked to do several things during your audition.  Be sure to ask questions if you do not understand what is being asked of you.
  • Have fun and do your best!

After your audition is over:

  • Audition results will be emailed to you within a week of your audition. At that time you will know whether or not you have been offered placement in CAPAA.
  • If you are offered a spot in CAPAA, you may proceed to schedule with your school counselor.
  • If you are not offered placement in CAPAA, don't give up!  Please keep enjoying your passion and audition again next year.
